Video has emerged of the tragic crew of an Indonesian submarine singing a local hit whose title means “Goodbye” – a few weeks before the vessel sank with all 53 sailors aboard.
Heri Oktavian, the commander of the ill-fated KRI Nanggala 402, is among those gathered around a seaman strumming an acoustic guitar, Agence France-Presse reported.
“Even though I’m not ready to be missing you, I’m not ready to live without you,” the sailors sing in the poignant rendition of “Sampai Jumpa.” “I wish all the best for you.”
The footage was recorded as a farewell for the outgoing commander of the navy’s submarine corps, whose successor assumed the role in early March, military spokesman Djawara Whimbo told AFP.
Erix Soekamti, the original performer of the song, posted the haunting video on Instagram on Sunday, CBS News reported.
The Indonesian military officially said all 53 crew members are dead after the wreckage of the submarine was found Sunday in at least three parts on the ocean floor.
The grim announcement comes a day after Indonesia said the craft was considered sunk, not merely missing, but did not explicitly say whether the crew was dead.
Officials previously said the German-built, diesel-powered sub’s oxygen supply would have run out early Saturday, three days after it went missing off the resort island of Bali.
“We received underwater pictures that are confirmed as parts of the submarine, including its rear vertical rudder, anchors, outer pressure body, embossed dive rudder and other ship parts,” military chief Hadi Tjahjanto told reporters in Bali on Sunday.
“With this authentic evidence, we can declare that KRI Nanggala 402 has sunk and all the crew members are dead,” Tjahjanto said.
An underwater robot equipped with cameras documented the wreckage lying on the ocean floor at a depth of 2,750 feet, said Adm. Yudo Margono, the navy’s chief of staff.
On Monday, the navy was trying to work out how it could salvage the remnants of the vessel and retrieve the bodies of its crew.
“We will analyze the underwater pictures and video, the current, etc., to decide the technology that will be used,” First Adm. Julius Widjojono said, Reuters reported.
Meanwhile, grieving relatives gathered on the seashore in Bali to pay their respects to their loved ones.
Family members of crew member I Gede Kartika gathered at Celukan Bawang on Bali’s north coast, where they carried incense, flowers and framed photos of him in his uniform.
Others rowed out to sea to ceremonially scatter petals in the water.
“We have already given our son to the government. Now that he has fallen in this operation, we hope the government will return his remains to us after all the official ceremonies,” said Wayan Darmanta, the uncle of the submariner.
President Joko Widodo offered his condolences to the families and pledged the state would fund the education of the dead sailors’ children.
