What is crime like in the COVID crisis? News10NBC finds the data - WHEC

McLaughlin owns the salon with her husband. She says the thief went through boxes and bags behind the counter.

"This is where the camera caught him, was right up here," she said pointing to a camera on the wall in a corner.

The security video shared with News10NBC shows a man with a hoodie walking through the lobby and towards the back of the salon.

Melissa McLaughlin, MB Salon and Spa: "I knew this was going to happen. It was just a matter of time."

Brean: "Why did you think this was going to happen?"

McLaughlin: "Well New York State shut down all non-essential businesses. For small business owners, there are people that are going to be running around doing crazy things because there is limited money."

Brean: "So you feel like you're a target here."

McLaughlin: "Oh, 100%."

News10NBC looked at numbers from the Rochester Police Department and compared the last week in March this year to the last week of March last year.

The burglaries are about the same.

  • 21 last year.
  • 20 this year.

But larcenies, the theft of personal property, are cut in half.

  • 111 in one week in March 2019.
  • 62 in the same week of March in 2020.

Larceny is one of the crimes the Monroe County Sheriff's office is tracking while we're in this crisis. The others are domestic violence crimes and mental health arrests.

"So we found all the numbers slipped down slightly," Sheriff Todd Baxter said. "So I'm pleasantly surprised I guess is the best way to put it."

I contacted all the major police departments in our area.

Webster and Greece police say no increase in those crimes.

Here are the stats from Webster PD.

Mental Health Arrests:

  • Jan. 2018: 18
  • Jan. 2019: 27
  • Jan. 2020: 25
  • Feb. 2018: 24
  • Feb. 2019: 16
  • Feb. 2020: 18
  • March 2018: 14
  • March 2019: 26
  • March 2020: 25

DWI:

From January of 2018 to March of 2018, there were nine total DWIs.

The same period in 2019 saw 21 DWIs.

The same period in 2020 saw 16 DWIs.

Ogden Police Chief Chris Mears wrote in an email it has an "80% increase in mental health transports."

Gates Police Chief Jim Vanbrederode says compared to March of last year, domestic violence calls are up and larceny cases are up.

Here are the numbers for Gates PD:

  • 2019 March Domestics: 38
  • 2020 March Domestics: 54
  • 2019 March Larcenies: 49
  • 2020 March Larcenies: 83 (most of these are shoplifters which has increased)

Chief Vanbrederode said the total calls for service are down about 5%.

In an email, he wrote "We did have 2 serious felonies committed and apprehended as a result of COVID – 4 kids out of school and bored ages 12 – 18 broke into a restaurant during daytime hours and were caught walking down the street with the cash register and alcohol bottles. We had an armed robbery of a Hotel by a person just out of money and desperate – caught walking away from the scene."

In an email, Livingston County Sheriff Tom Dougherty wrote, "our call volume is down considerably due to folks staying at home. We have not seen an increase in any type of crime."

Melissa McLaughlin says she prepared for this. When they closed the spa two weeks ago they took everything of value out of the shop.

McLaughlin: "You're helpless. You're just watching this man ruffle through your salon, ruffle through all the stuff you've worked so hard for, and you just hope that he gets caught."

In Ontario County, Sheriff Kevin Henderson says thefts are down.

Sheriff Kevin Henderson, Ontario County Sheriff's Office: "Eastview Mall is closed. We typically, on a given month, we might get 35 to 50 larcenies out of the mall."

Brean: "Are you seeing an increase in anything?"

Sheriff Henderson: "Not really, well we have seen a slight uptick in DWIs. We had one at five o'clock this morning. A deputy arrested someone this morning for DWI driving a lawnmower down the middle of a street in Shortsville."

Henderson's deputies made a drug bust Wednesday seizing heroin and fentanyl.

Sheriff Henderson: "Because I want the drug dealers to know we're not going to tolerate drug deals still going on during the crisis. So I want the message out there, we're going to go after them."
