LONDON – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds announced the birth of "a healthy baby boy" at a London hospital on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the leader and his partner said Symonds was "doing very well." The baby's birth comes just days after Johnson, 55, returned to work following a bout with the coronavirus that saw him spend time in intensive care.

Symonds, 32, is the first unmarried partner of a British leader to live at No. 10 Downing Street – Johnson's office and residence. Johnson has two ex-wives and other romantic entanglements that have produced at least four children.

Johnson became the first major world leader known to have contracted COVID-19 on March 26. He was hospitalized 10 days later. He was discharged from St Thomas' Hospital on April 12 and returned to work Monday after recuperating at his country residence. Symonds also experienced coronavirus symptoms.

The couple were engaged last year and had been expecting the baby in early summer. A name for the baby was not made known. British bookmakers Paddy Power said "Alexander," "James" and "Matthew" were among the favorites.
