LONDON—U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds announced the birth of a baby boy, capping a tumultuous month for the British leader who is just back at work after being hospitalized by the new coronavirus.

A spokesman for the couple said Wednesday the couple were “thrilled” after the birth of a healthy baby at a London hospital, adding that both mother and son were doing very well. Mr. Johnson will take a short period of paternity leave later in the year but was back in Downing Street by Wednesday morning after being present at the birth, his spokesman said.

The timing of the baby’s arrival caught many by surprise. Ms. Symonds, 32, announced in February she was pregnant but said she was expecting the birth in early summer. Many in the country have been transfixed instead by the couple’s recent brush with Covid-19.

The 55-year-old Mr. Johnson was admitted to an intensive-care unit earlier this month as he struggled with severe symptoms from the virus, he was released from hospital on Easter Sunday. Ms. Symonds meanwhile was forced to self-isolate after herself suffering symptoms of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Both have now made full recoveries. Mr. Johnson’s spokesman declined to provide more detail on the birth of the couple’s son.

When the news was announced, congratulations flooded in from across the political spectrum welcoming a rare piece of good news as the pandemic’s death toll continues to rise with 21,000 killed by the virus in the U.K.

Twice divorced, Mr. Johnson has fiercely guarded his private life and has declined to comment on the number of children he has fathered. He had four children during a previous marriage and the existence of another of his offspring was disclosed in court proceedings. Late last year, he become engaged to Ms. Symonds, whom he met while she worked for the Conservative Party in a communications role.

Ahead of the birth announcement, there was speculation about Mr. Johnson’s whereabouts when the government said he wouldn’t be attending prime minister’s questions in Parliament on Wednesday. It should have been his first since recovering from Covid-19.

The child is the third to be born to a sitting prime minister in two decades. Both David Cameron and Tony Blair had babies while living in Downing Street. “Sorry we didn’t leave the cot,” Mr. Cameron tweeted Wednesday. “But the climbing frame should still be in the garden.”

In the past, the arrival of a newborn in Downing Street heralds a small bump in the polls. Mr. Johnson’s handling of the crisis has already seen his popularity rating rise 17 points since March to 51%, according to pollster Ipsos Mori.

However, opposition lawmakers are critical of the government’s initial decision to delay implementation of a lockdown and now for its failure to map a way to ease the restrictions. Britain is on track to register one of the highest death tolls in Europe from the crisis.
