The Chinese minister of foreign affairs reportedly called for the world to "positively guide" the Taliban in their newly acquired role leading the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in a phone call with Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi has been in communication with Blinken over the matter since at least July to discuss the ever-changing security situation in Afghanistan, along with U.S. and Chinese efforts to evacuate their citizens safely. Wang reportedly said during the call that the United States should collaborate with the international community to provide economic and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, such as maintaining currency valuation and social stability.

"While respecting the sovereignty of Afghanistan, the U.S. should take concrete action to help Afghanistan fight terrorism and stop violence, rather than playing double standards or fighting terrorism selectively," Wang said to Blinken, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry webpage.

State Department spokesman Ned Price underscored the "importance of the international community holding the Taliban accountable for the public commitments" regarding the safe passage and freedom to travel for Afghan and other foreign nationals.

Shortly after the fall of the Afghan government, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying announced China would have "friendly and cooperative" relations with the Taliban.

"The Taliban have repeatedly expressed their hope to develop good relations with China, and that they look forward to China's participation in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan," Hua said on Aug 16.

Wang has also called the Taliban a "crucial military and political force in Afghanistan that is expected to play an important role in the peace, reconciliation, and reconstruction process of the country."

China has not recognized the Taliban as the leaders of the government in Afghanistan.

While the new Taliban government has allowed for the U.S. and other allied countries to perform sweeping evacuation operations, the White House has attempted to downplay ties with the Taliban after 13 Americans were killed in Afghanistan when a suicide bomb detonated last Thursday.

The Taliban are not a "group we trust," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said last week.

Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban spokesman, said earlier this month that China could play a part in Afghanistan's future under the militant group's regime.
