Onlookers cheered Saturday as rescuers lifted teenager Inci Okan out of a collapsed eight-floor apartment complex in the Turkish city of Izmir, a day after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked the region.

Inci’s dog, Fistik, was also rescued, offering a bright moment as crews picked and plowed through the devastation, The Associated Press reported.

The death toll rose to 28 as hundreds of aftershocks rippled on, and more than 800 were injured in three Turkish cities. So far, roughly 100 people have been rescued.

The powerful quake off in the Aegean Sea shook Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, the hardest when it hit midday Friday, sending a mini-tsunami flooding the streets as it toppled at least 20 buildings.

At least 26 in the city were killed, including an elderly woman who drowned, and an untold number were trapped beneath the rubble of at least 20 pancaked buildings.

Workers were struggling Saturday to rescue a 38-year-old woman and her four children — aged 3, 7 and 10-year-old twins — from the remains of one of the collapsed structures, Reuters reported. Search and rescue operations were completed in eight buildings and were ongoing in nine others, officials said.

Two teenagers were also killed on the Greek Island of Samos after a wall collapsed on them. At least 19 people were injured on the island.

In a show of solidarity rare in months of tense bilateral relations, Greek and Turkish government officials issued mutual messages of solidarity while the leaders of Greece and Turkey held a telephone conversation.
