Crime down overall in Poway in 2019 - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Poway saw a significant drop in violent crime and a minor drop in property crime in 2019.

According to ARJIS (the Automated Regional Justice Information System), there were 541 total crimes reported in Poway between January and December 2019, a drop of a little over 5 percent from 2018.

Violent crime saw a drop of 20 percent and property crime dropped about 4 percent. Violent crimes include murder, rape, robberies (armed and strong arm) and aggravated assaults. Property crimes include burglaries (residential and non-residential), thefts (less than or equal to $400 and greater than $400) and motor vehicle thefts.

There were two murders in Poway during 2019, up from one in 2018. There were two rapes reported in 2019, which is an 82 percent drop from the 11 rapes reported during 2018.

Strom arm robbery, which is robbery committed with a threat of force or intimidation without a weapon, was the only uptick in violent crime in 2019, up 50 percent with nine reported crimes, compared to six in 2018. Armed robbery, which involves a weapon, remained the same as in 2018, with three reported crimes.

Aggravated assault, which is an attack on a person for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury, dropped almost 19 percent, with 35 reported crimes in 2019 compared to 43 in 2018.

Property crimes also saw several drops in 2019. Thefts overall were down 7 percent in 2019, with 26 fewer crimes reported in 2019. This includes a drop of 13 percent for thefts less than or equaling $400, with 21 fewer crimes reported, and a drop of 2 percent for thefts greater than $400, with five fewer crimes reported.

Motor vehicle crimes, however, saw a significant increase, with almost 22 percent more crimes reported in 2019, a total of 45 crimes compared to 37 reported in 2018.

Burglaries were split in 2019, with residential burglaries seeing a drop of about 8 percent (three fewer crimes than in 2018) and non-residential burglaries increasing about 4 percent (two more crimes than in 2018). Overall, burglaries dropped about a percent, with 91 total crimes in 2019 compared to 92 in 2018.

December was the month with the most reported crimes, with 56 (51 of which were property crimes), though January, February and October all saw 55 reported crimes. The months with the least reported crimes were September and November, which each had 28 crimes and April, with 33 crimes reported.
