Pro-crime lobby looking to take yet another policing tool away from NYPD - New York Post

In a pretty blatant pander to the left, the NYPD is purging its DNA database and shifting how it will collect and use DNA evidence going forward.

The department will audit tens of thousands of samples in the Local DNA Index System that are more than two years old; any not linked to a continuing case or conviction will be flagged for removal.

“We don’t want to saturate the database with profiles that aren’t yielding any results,” said Bob Barrows, NYPD director of legal operations.

But who knows if and when a profile might yield a result? It can take years — as viewers of “Cold Case Files” know full well. The national Combined DNA Index System, a k a CODIS, started by the FBI in the 1990s, has helped solve decades of unsolved crimes.

The NYPD’s database, which is maintained by the medical examiner’s office, helps solve crimes and also prevents criminals from flying under the radar. Every sample in it comes from someone suspected of an offense.

And the new policy won’t stop civil-liberties groups from attacking the very existence of the database. Terri Rosenblatt, the supervising attorney of the Legal Aid Society’s DNA Unit, still wants legislation to handcuff the cops: “Lawmakers should step in with real control and oversight of the NYPD and act to ban unlawful and unregulated DNA collection.”

In fact, the innocent have nothing to fear: The war on the database is purely about protecting criminals and handcuffing law enforcement.

With crime already rising thanks to the state’s no-bail law, this is the wrong time to take yet another tool from New York’s protecters. How far will this go before the tide turns back?
