Woman 'brutally assaulted' after speaking Spanish urges hate crime investigation, lawyers say | TheHill - The Hill

A Boston woman is calling for the city's police department to conduct a hate crime investigation after she said she and her daughter were attacked earlier this month after speaking Spanish.

The woman, identified only by her last name Vasquez, and her 15-year-old daughter were “brutally assaulted by two white assailants” near the Maverick Square public transit station on Saturday, Feb. 15, Vasquez’s lawyers said.

“We were attacked, punched, kicked, and bitten. I’m having nightmares,” Vasquez said in a release. “I’m afraid to take the train to work, and my family is afraid to speak Spanish in public. My daughter is still wearing a neck brace and she’s having trouble sleeping. We are all very shaken.”

NBC-10 in Boston appears to have a video showing the incident.

She is being represented by Lawyers for Civil Rights, which is providing free legal support to the family.

The lawyers said the Vasquez family has not been notified of any arrests and said the Boston Police Department only followed up to formally interview the Vasquez family after legal counsel intervened.

“This family’s experience was not an isolated event; acts of racism and xenophobia are alarmingly common in East Boston,” Janelle Dempsey, an attorney with Lawyers for Civil Rights, said in a statement. “Most of the time, victims and witnesses are reluctant to speak out of fear and trauma. But the Vasquez family wants the police to hold the assailants accountable.”

A spokesperson for the Boston Police Department told The Hill the incident is still under investigation adding that there was a “lengthy report” done when an officer showed up.

The Vasquez family is demanding the police department dedicate all available resources to investigate the alleged hate crime.

Lawyers for Civil Rights said the department must also conduct an assessment of its procedures of identifying and responding to hate crimes.
