While COVID-19 cases are growing in Georgia, the number of total part one crimes so far this year has decreased 29.5 percent compared to 2019.

“From January the 1st through March the 30th, we’ve noticed 667 less part one crimes as compared to last year,” said Assistant Chief of Police Gil Slouchick. “We’re seeing our biggest deduction in burglary and larceny.”

In comparison to 2019, that’s 124 less burglaries, 72 fewer auto thefts and over 400 less larcenies.

“That’s probably because more people are working from home. More people are staying at home.”

The officers are practicing social distancing, but when it comes to an arrest they don’t have a choice. However, if an officer asks you to step outside of your home, it’s to prevent COVID-19 contamination.

“If an officer comes to your house for some information or a call he may ask you to step outside of your house, so you need to be prepared for that and don’t think that’s something unusual.”

Staying at home is key, and that includes asking for reports and calling in crimes. Just go to their website at www.columbusga.gov/police. Then click on records and reports.

“It’s not necessary to go out of the house to come down here and get a police report. You can do all of that from home. Of course the offense report, if you’ve been a victim of a crime, we’ll email you that within 24 hours and it’s free of charge.”

If you would like to call in a report or have a question for an officer, dial 706-225-3215.
